Almost every year since 1996 the Chemistry Department has given the opportunity for Year 13 Chemistry students to participate in the NZIC Analytical Chemistry Competition.
Secondary Schools in the University of Waikato catchment area (Waikato, Bay of Plenty, King Country), send teams of four to the University for one day in June each year.
Overall the competition enables keen Year 13 chemists to spend a day in the University laboratories and mix with peers from other schools. This also provides an opportunity for the teachers who accompany the students to meet with each other and University chemists.
The emphasis on this occasion is experiencing what it is like to be in a University environment for the day, as much as in exercising chemical skills.
The competition requires skill in the careful and accurate analysis (usually by titrimetric and gravimetric methods) of an unknown substance.
